Some people come to me knowing exactly what they want to talk about. For others, there may be questions as to what they could even talk about with me. I feel this way sometimes as well, and I think there’s good reason for it. Receiving spiritual direction or coaching is not something a lot of us grew up doing within western culture, so it’s no wonder it can be hard to even know what to bring to a session.

Really, though, finding what needs to be expressed or examined can be a stress-free task.

  • Figure out what’s stirring in your life. Is there something that keeps coming up for you over and over again? Do you notice something seems to really be calling your attention? It may be looking for a way to be expressed. As one dreamworker once told me, unexpressed needs will find a way to keep coming to the surface until we acknowledge them and listen to what they have to say.
  • Keep a journal of what’s happening in your life. Sometimes keeping an account of what’s been happening in your life can help you realize where the place are in your life that need acknowledgement. After all, so much happens in a given day that it can be difficult to remember it all. But your journal never forgets, especially if you have a regular practice of writing in it at a particular time every day.
  • Take notes during sessions with other professionals. Are you seeing a therapist? A mentor? Speaking with colleagues? This could be great fodder for spiritual companioning and coaching as well since they ask different questions. What’s been coming up for you in conversations with others?
  • Ask yourself what your biggest questions about life are right now. What are the things that you’re wondering most about during this stage in your life? What would it be like to write down every question that comes to you, no matter how silly it may seem at first? Sometimes these questions can be great fodder for a conversation with a professional!
  • Do a free write. Sigmund Freud wasn’t so far off when he said slips of the tongue often reveal a person’s inner thoughts and feelings. Just so, when we free write, it’s easy to reveal things deep in our psyches we had no idea was there. Maybe you might even find food for a good session with your spiritual companion or coach!

Meeting with your spiritual companion or coach doesn’t need to be stressful. Finding what is moving in your life may require some attention, but it doesn’t need to stress you out. If you still don’t know what to talk about, show up anyway; your support team may just have questions to draw out what you need to talk about in the moment!
